Place of origin |
A rather short, and plump, woman is depicted standing before a dressing table, gazing at herself in the mirror set before her. Illustrated in a particularly ungraceful manner, the woman stands in her undergarments with her legs widely parted. Despite the inscription below the image making reference to the petticoat being a necessity for women to keep warm, the caricature seems to mock this idea by presenting the woman wearing her yellow flannel petticoat well above her knees. Tucked into her petticoat is a white chemise, and covering her legs a white stockings, those of which are decorated with pink ribbons. On her feet, she wears yellow and green striped shoes, and over her head, a white bonnet with pink ribbons and a bow. Emerging from beneath her bonnet, and falling around the nape of her beck, and brown locks of hair.
The dressing table which the woman stands in front of not only features a large mirror, but set to the left is a glass jar, inscribed with ‘Eye Water’. Sitting on the right side of the table are a pin cushion, and what appears to be a powder-puff.
In the lower right corner of the composition, two robes sit on the floor, one green, and one white.
This caricature is a companion plate to 'A correct Front View of a Ladys Dickey', which shows a front view of the same woman, and is detailed in BM Satires 9829.
