Relief Panel

Sculpture
14th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This stone panel carved shallow relief depicts scenes of everyday like: a woman approaching a stream holds the folds of her skirt (sarong), while servants carrying baskets wade through the water ahead of her; the landscape elements appear as curling foliage. The panle is bordered by two bands of alternating 'eye' and flower motifs. The fragmentary panel probably adorned a temple or secular building in East Java, Indonesia. The stylisation of the human figures, and particularly the frontal treatment of their borides with the heads in three-quarter profile, is a convention preserved to this day in the shadow puppets (wayang kulit) of Java and Bali.
