This bedding cover would have been part of a bride's wedding trousseau. Designs on such celebratory textiles were chosen to bestow good fortune on the newly married couple. This motif of pine, bamboo and plum symbolises longevity, perseverance and renewal. The upper part of the cover features a large crest, known as a mon, which served to affirm family status, kinship and loyalty.

Futon quilt cover with Shô-chiku-bai and omodaka mon design. Cotton, dyed and painted, with a large free design showing a flowering plum-tree in pink, grey and pale blue on a dark blue ground. At the top is a large blue stylised plant within a circle.
