During the Cultural Revolution, the outward sign of
boundless loyalty to Chairman Mao was the wearing of
his image, usually on lapel badges. A small number of
centrally-approved images of Mao, at various stages in
his career, were manufactured in immense quantities and
in a very wide variety of media.
