One of twenty-two contact print photographs; which has been cut out, arranged and mounted on card. Depicting Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret, Buckingham Palace, 1945. Standing, full-length, at the foot of an interior staircase. The balusters are carved into decorative floral and leaf-like forms. Both princesses are wearing pale chiffon gowns and double-string pearl necklaces. They look towards a point to one side of the camera and are smiling. Princess Margaret holds her hands together at her waist; while Princess Elizabeth extends one hand to rest on the banister. Behind them, gilded panelling and mouldings are seen on the walls. An ornate grandfather clock and wall mounted candelabra are also seen in the background.

After each royal sitting, Beaton would send a selection of the best photographs to the Palace for official approval before publication. Small prints of the approved photographs would be mounted on card, together with their negative numbers, to facilitate future print orders. The worn-out nature of this card indicates how frequently it must have been referred to by Beaton and his assistants.
