Just as newspaper readers had responded enthusiastically to Beaton’s wartime portraits of royalty, they were moved by the intimacy of the studies of the infant royals. One reader wrote to The Sunday Graphic and Sunday News: ‘Thank you for your page one picture last week – the picture of Prince Charles with his baby sister, which so many have been waiting so long to see. In my opinion Cecil Beaton surpassed all expectation.’
