Pelmet of indigo blue plain weave cotton with a design of flowers and Chinese characters (see Marks & Inscriptions section for details) reseved in white by the stencilled resist-paste technique. The flowers depicted are narcissi, chrysanthemums and peonies.
The top and sides of the pelmet are hemmed with machine stitching. The bottom is a selvedge.

Physical description
Pelmet of indigo blue plain weave cotton with a design of flowers and Chinese characters (see Marks & Inscriptions section for details) reseved in white by the stencilled resist-paste technique. The flowers depicted are narcissi, chrysanthemums and peonies.
The top and sides of the pelmet are hemmed with machine stitching. The bottom is a selvedge.

Marks and inscriptions
  • 1. 'Fu gui rong hua' 2. 'Shou bi nan shan fu ru dong hai' 3. 'Bai sui chang le' (Separarte inscriptions across the top, right to left.)
    Translation
    1. Riches, honour, glory and splendour. 2. Longevity great as the Southern mountain, prosperity great as the Eastern sea. 3. One hundred years of perpetual joy.
  • 1. 'Hong mei duo jie zi' 2. 'Lu zhu you sheng sun' (Separate inscriptions on the verticals, right to left.)
    Translation
    1. Red plum has many seeds. (this is a pun on 'many sons') 2. Green bamboo again puts forth shoots. (this is a pun on 'grandsons')
