Bastiaan Boers, who engraved the calligraphic inscription on this bottle, was a schoolmaster at Warmond, near Leiden in the United Provinces (now The Netherlands), specialising in French. He excelled at ornamental writing on paper, which was a popular recreation at the time. Inspired by the famous amateur Leiden glass-engraver Willem van Heemskerk, Boers adapted this skill to decorate fine glassware.
He signed and dated this bottle ‘B. Boers 20 Mey 1699 Warmont’, and inscribed it with a biblical verse from the book of Matthew in French: ‘Aux Fruicts vous les congoistrez’ (By their fruits you will know them).
