Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Kawase follows in the footsteps of his father, Kawase Chikuo (1894-1983), in his time one of Japan's most talented makers of Chinese-style blue-and-white porcelain. His son, Kawase Shinobu (b.1950), is well known for his work in the style of Southern Song period celadons. The Kawase family have lived in Oiso near Yokohama since 1949. Before this they were based in Kyoto, where Chikuo trained with Miura Chikusen III (1900-90), a leading maker of Chinese-style ceramics with well-established links to the world of steeped tea (sencha) drinking.
