Hamada Shinsaku, who made this stoneware jar, is the second son of Hamada Shoji, one of Japan's most famous twentieth century potters. He continues in his father's footsteps as an important mingei or folk craft artist. The use of overlapping light and dark glazes seen on this jar is characteristic of much Japanese mingei pottery.
