Pencil drawing depicting Kaled, a page from a narrative poem by Lord Byron entitled 'Lara, A Tale'. Inscribed with lines from the poem. The character of Kaled is a a female disguised as a male. Lara returns to the feudal castle of his youth, followed by his page Kaled (Gulnare in disguise). When Lara is suspected of murdering a man who would reveal his past crimes, he joins a serf uprising and is killed in battle. Kaled, her true identity discovered, descends into madness and dies.

Bibliographic reference | Pillar stand of thirty frames, containing three hundred and ninety drawings and sketches in pencil, pen and ink, and colour - figures, landscapes, etc. There are also seven by other hands (aside from Maclise) - Calderon, T.S. Cooper, Cope, Herbert, and Landseer, all R.A., F. Danby, A.R.A., and G. Cattermole.
