The text is as follows: school of TINTORETTO, JACOPO 340 Recto and verso Studies (one on each side of the sheet) from Michelangelo’s lost group of Smason slaying two Philistines Inscribed in ink ‘Tintoretto’ Black chalk heightened with white on pale brown paper; the corners cut Size of sheet 11 ¼ x 5 ¾ (286 x 145) Dyce 238 PROVENANCE Sir J. For two other studies of the same subject see no. 339, recto and verso. See also the note under that entry. It is hard to believe that Tintoretto himself was responsible for all of the numerous sketches after this piece of sculpture which have survived from his studio, and it is reasonable to assume that the less accomplished versions, including our four, were the work of pupils, who were perhaps set this task as part of their training.
