Hans Speckaert spent most of his brief career inRome. More than any of his predecessors, his art combined Netherlandish traditions with Italian sources, particularly the work of Raphael, Michelangelo and Parmigianino. The expressive hatching and flamboyant, stylised figures in this drawing are typical of Speckaert’s highly refined ‘Late Mannerist’ style, which influenced Netherlandish artists including Anthony van Dyck.
