Nicolaes Berchem was a leading member of the second generation of ‘Dutch Italianates’. The school of artists were active in Rome throughout the 17th century. It specialised in pastoral scenes set in Italianate landscapes. Berchem’s idealised rustic figures greatly influenced later artists including Thomas Gainsborough and Jean-Antoine Watteau.(12/05/2016)
