Signed and dated at bottom, in brown ink, HB(in ligature)ol / 1580; and inscribed at lower right, in another hand, also in brown ink (with the museum’s Dyce inv. no.), 501.
Gallery label
Although the village setting appears realistic, Bol put this scene together from different drawings he had made from life. The artist was known for reusing architectural features and the buildings in this drawing appear in several other compositions. These types of highly finished drawings with strong contours were often used as designs for prints.
