Abraham Bloemaert made this drawing during the last years of his long life. A devout Catholic, he spent most of his career in Utrecht, a Catholic stronghold in the predominately Protestant Dutch Republic. Scenes of the penitent Mary Magdalen atoning for her sins were especially popular during the Catholic Counter- Reformation. Bloemaert depicted the subject several times.
