Physical description

A multi-figured composition of the Crucifixion at Golgotha, with tall mountains in the right background and the three crosses of Christ and the two thieves on a hillock at upper left. Among the throngs of spectators of all ages—some standing, some seated, some mounted on horseback—are a mother and baby seated at lower right centre and a man hobbling on crutches to the right of her.

Marks and inscriptions

Inscribed at lower right, in brown ink (with the museum’s Dyce inv. no.), 388; on verso, in brown ink: at upper left, N. 56; at upper centre, TT; and along left edge (with the sheet turned 90º), Lucas van Leyden; and at lower right, in black chalk, L– / 10:0. Inscribed on plain old beige mount, at lower right, in a nineteenth-century hand, in pencil (with Dyce’s original inv. no.), 196.
