This album contains thirteen photographs of silhouettes depicting various members of the Fellowes family. Each photograph has been mounted on card, annotated with the name of the sitter at the bottom and then inserted into the album.

Around 1880, a photographic portrait studio by the name of E. & J. Baldwin was commissioned to photograph a series of silhouettes, or 'shadow profiles', made earlier in the century. This represents an intersection of two methods of recording one's likeness, practiced almost one hundred years apart. It is interesting to consider that this family had its collection of silhouettes photographed, possibly for posterity, and fashioned a beautiful album in which to display them.

Labels and date

Photography Centre, 2018-20:

E. & J. Baldwin Photographic Portrait Studio (active 1880s)
Silhouettes from the album Hurstbourne in the Forties
Silhouettes 1840s; photographs about 1880

This album is inscribed: ‘The originals of these (life size) were done by outlining the shadows on a wall and then filled in with black’. These photographs reduce the scale of the original painted silhouettes and conveniently gather them together in a kind of family album. Both silhouettes and photography shared the desire to capture the likeness of an individual through light and shade.

These photographs were collected in an album inscribed: ‘The originals of these (life size) were done by outlining the shadows on a wall and then filled in with black – they were in my possession.’ Probably owned by a member of the Fellowes family, the photographs record the proto-photographic silhouettes and represent an intersection of two closely related methods of portraiture.
