Place of origin |
'Folk Archive' is a collection of the visual ephemera of Britain today, from murals and graffiti to souped-up cars and motorcycle hearses. Over the course of seven years, Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane collected objects and photographs of places, customs, and things that they propose 'might constitute modern day folk art.' Deller has stated: 'Warhol said that pop art was about liking things, whereas for me folk art is about loving things.' The archive was exhibited at the Barbican Art Gallery in 2005, and has since toured to other venues in the UK, Switzerland and Japan.

Republican Mural, Belfast, from the series Folk Archive
2005
Deller and Kane both use collaboration in their practices and work in a
variety of media. Folk Archive is a collection of objects and photographs of
places and customs that the artists gathered in their search for a ‘modern
day folk art’. The collection brings to light creative work that falls outside
of the art establishment. It celebrates the traditions, the humour and the
eccentricities of today’s Britain. The archive was exhibited and published in
the book Folk Archive: Contemporary Popular Art from the UK (2005).
