Sash (Obi)

1800 - 1955 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

On black cotton warps, set at ten per centimetre, are woven torn strips of cloth (a method known as sakiori) in subdued tones of grey, brown, green and blue. These coloured threads are interspersed with narrow stripes of white, one pick deep, at intervals along the obi’s length. Some of the wefts are made from variegated pieces of cotton to provide a contrast with the stripes of solid colour.
A fringe, one centimetre deep, of the black wefts has been left at each end of the obi. It is worn doubled over as the crease down the centre shows.
