Object history | Design for a gold mug. Bell shaped with a raised band of acanthus ornament around the body. Around the base of the body cereal ears. The handle formed as a pair of serpents. The cereal ears probably represent barley suggesting that this mug is associated with beer.
This drawing was made for plate 29 in John Vardy Some designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. Wm. Kent. 1744. It has been scored for transfer.
It shows a gold mug designed by William Kent and made for Colonel James Pelham and is most probably copied from a drawing by Kent.
A gold cup to this design is not known to survive but a pair in silver to the same design but with different handles was made by George Wickes for Sir John Hanbury Williams in 1745-6. |
