In the 19th century Punch and Judy shows became a popular feature of seaside entertainment. The crowd in the picture are gathered round a booth on the seafront at Llandudno, watching a performance by one of the Codman family. The first member of the family to have a Punch and Judy show was Richard Codman, who began performing and making puppets in 1850. His son carried on the tradition, passing on the skills to his own children, and at the beginning of the 21st century the fifth and sixth generations were still giving regular shows.
