Tray of rectangular form with slightly curved sides, inverted corners and a slightly everted rim, wood which is either lightly covered or, in places, more thickly covered in black, brown and gold lacquer, with an outdoor scene of groups of rakan (Buddhist disciples), a dragon and tiger in gold, brown, black and red hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened) and takamaki-e lacquer (maki-e in which parts of the design can be raised by clay or charcoal powder), the whole being inlaid with ivory, shell, hardstones and gold foil (kinpaku). The upper part of the decorative area is inscribed with a poem in gold hiramaki-e lacquer and the centre of all four rims depict a mon (family crest) of the Tokugawa family in gold foil on a gold lacquer ground.
