With the introduction of superior western technology, lacquer craftsmen began to experiment in their craft. One area of research was the use of base materials other than wood. A particularly exotic effect was archived by applying lacquer to tortoiseshell. These types of objects were mainly produced in Nagasaki.

Purchased from the Paris Exhibition, 1867, accessioned in 1869. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
