Gallery label | The designs on these resist-dyed cottons cover a wide range of themes. Some motifs, like these, are unique to certain minority peoples. Some are shared with Han Chinese people. In the past, a particular patter was thought to denote a particular ethnic affiliation. Through inter-marriage, migration and displacement, designs have been adapted and techniques exchanged between groups. Today, unless a piece is collected in the village where it was made, it is not possible to say where it came from. |

Object history | These blue and white cotton pieces (FE.97 to O-1983) were loosely wrapped in paper from the Peking Arts and Crafts Shop and it may be that all of them were purchased there rather than in the areas of manufacture. Registered File number 1965/3344. |
