The designs on these resist-dyed cottons cover a wide range of themes. Some motifs, like these, are unique to certain minority peoples. Some are shared with Han Chinese people. In the past, a particular patter was thought to denote a particular ethnic affiliation. Through inter-marriage, migration and displacement, designs have been adapted and techniques exchanged between groups. Today, unless a piece is collected in the village where it was made, it is not possible to say where it came from.
