Labels and date

This length of cotton was decorated using stencils and a bean paste resist. Identical stencils must have been placed on the front and the back of the cloth as the design appears clearly on both sides. Traditionally, cotton with large-scale designs was used for quilt covers and door curtains. This piece, with its repeat pattern, would have been cut from a long bolt and sold by length. Older pieces were individually designed with several different border and background patterns. []
