Object history | From Register: Ts'ai-Ch'uan (d. 1894), eldest son of Prince Ting and great, great grandson of the Qianlong emperor left a collection of verse entitled Xing You Heng Tang (see Arthur W. Hummel. Eminent Chinese of the Ching period (1644-1912). U..S: Washington, 1943-44. p. 728) Cf. a similar piece in the Laurence Sickman collection with identical date and studio mark. Production | Artist: Lei XX (about 1885 - about 1960). Biographical reference: See memo. Beijing From Register: Information from Wang Zhixiang 9/1983: all incised gourds in circulartion with 'Xing You Heng Tang' marks are fakes. They were all made by a man surnamed Lei, a friend of his in Beijing in the 1930s and 1940s. Mr. Lei died in about 1960 aged about 75. This is an example of his work. |
