This vase is said to have been bought by Henry Florence from Gallé's widow, Henriette Grimm-Gallé, after Gallé's death in 1904. The glass type is a late development in Gallé's wide range of colours and textures imitating agates and various effects found in Nature. Here it has been carved with decoration of a flowering magnolia branch. Like many of his contemporaries, Gallé, the botanist, was much influenced by Japanese art and drew on plants found in Japanese design for inspiration
