Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) was a leading light in the etching revival of the 1960s, exploring the potential of the medium in new ways and inspiring a wave of post-war British artists to do so also. Trevelyan developed his own distinctive visual vocabulary as a printmaker, as exemplified by this print, 'Henley', an etching and aquatint which formed one of his 'Thames Suite' (1969). Far from being an essay in nostalgic topography, Trevelyan deconstructs his subject of a Henley regatta into a collage of elementary shapes, patterns and colours. In breaking the composition down into these essential elements, with disconcerting shifts of scale and spatial relationships,Trevelyan expresses his intense response to the scene he is depicting.
