Drawing of a car

Drawing
1940s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Wilfrid R. Addey (1912-1999) worked as a commercial artist for over sixty years, working for Dorland Advertising and Mitchells among other London advertising firms. His work shows the range of products and illustration styles, from aeroplanes and cars, beer and perfume, to satirical cartoons and calendar pin-up girls and is representative of the post war boom in advertising during the late 1940s and 1950s.

This pencil and chalk drawing shows a late 1940s sports car style facing left. The chalk and pencil have been combined to convey the fall of light on the contours of the car. Although not a particular make this style of car is similar to that of the British manufacturer Morgan. With petrol being rationed during the Second World War (1939-1945) few people were able to run cars. Depictions such as this, conveying the speed and design of cars reflects a growing interest in cars during the post war years.
