This drawing is part of the Vanbrugh Album from the Library at Elton Hall. The Album contains 254 drawings and includes works by Sir John Vanbrugh, Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, William Talman, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Richard Castle and anonymous draughtsmen in Vanbrugh's office. It was created ca. 1945-54 and was purchased by Victoria and Albert Museum in 1992.

  • 'The scale is 10 feet to an inch and may be found almost on every foot ruler. The east front placed 12 foot below the level of the hill by which means there will one & ½ turn of the stairs to the door backwards from the level of the hill to the plan of the great room & ½ a turn to second story from the door west, in the second story a galery to run from the stairs to the front 7 feet wide and two small rooms of each side 4 in all.' (Inscribed in ink in Pearce's hand.)
