There was fierce competition in the computer games' market in the 1990s between the two Japanese companies, Sega and Nintendo. Each adopted what has since become an iconic character to star in their games. Nintendo had Mario, a short Italian plumber, and Sega had Sonic, a blue hedgehog. This is the third Sonic game which introduced an additional rival to the evil Dr Robotnik - Knuckles, the echidna.
