Mug of earthenware transfer-printed in black enamel and painted over the glaze. Cylindrical in shape and with a flat loop handle. On the front is a print painted over in red, yellow, blue and green and inscribed 'AN EAST VIEW OF LIVERPOOL LIGHT HOUSE AND SIGNALS ON BIDSTON HILL'. Various flags on each side of the lighthouse are numbered one to fifty-eight and below it is a list with names of shipowners and types of ships corresponding to the numbers. Underneath these is the inscription 'Mr. Thompson's a Red Flag over a White one on Mr. Wilding's Pole / For more that four Vessels of one kind a flag on the proper Staff / N. Formby Channel Distress-S. Rock Channel Distress.'.
