Plate of earthenware transfer-printed in black enamel and painted over the glaze. Wavy edge with a blue line, with scattered sprigs of flowers over the rim, and in the middle is a circular panel containing a pair of compasses beneath which is the figure of a woman holding a book inscribed 'The Pleasures of Imagination Realized' and standing in a landscape with a dog at her feet and beside her is an open box of jewellery inscribed 'The Reward of Virtue'. Above the compass is the inscription 'FEAR GOD'. Round the panel is the motto 'KEEP WITHIN COMPASS AND YOU SHALL BE SURE / TO AVOID MANY TROUBLES WHICH OTHERS ENDURE'. Above the panel is the motto 'KEEP WITHIN COMPASS' repeated, and below are the words 'Prudence Brings Esteem'. Surrounding the panels are vignettes representing a woman playing cards, drinking and neglecting her child, and under arrest in prison. Between the vignettes on each side is a rococo frame enclosing the mottoes 'Attend unto this / simple fact / As thro' this / Life / you rove' on the left, and 'That / virtuous and / prudent ways / Will gain / esteem and love' on the right. Coloured in green, blue, yellow, red and purple.
