The mosaic is a fragment of a wall mosaic showing the head of a saint with a beard.

It is from the Basilica Sant'Ambrogio at Milan.

Sant' Ambrogio is one of the most ancient of the churches in Milan. The basilica has two bell towers. The smaller one is from the 9th century and the higher one dates from 1144 with the last two floors added in 1889.

The Basilica was heavily bombed and damaged in 1943 by Anglo-American bombings.
