Physical description

Teapot and cover of earthenware transfer-printed in black enamel.
[Teapot] Teapot, oval in shape and moulded in four wavy lobes, with a spreading foot and loop handles. On one side is a half-length portrait between rococo scrolls inscribed 'JOHN WILKES ESQR. THE PATRIOT' flanked by small seated figures of Liberty, holding a wreath and a cap on a staff and leaning against a pedestal inscribed 'Magna Charta', and Britannia. On the other side is an allegorical subject of a young man approaching Liberty represented as a woman swooning into the arms of Wilkes robed as Lord Mayor of London, her pike and cap and a scroll inscribed 'MAGNA CHARTA BILL OF RIGHTS' on the ground, and a shield bearing the Union Jack beside her.
[Cover] Cover with a knob in the form of a fig and decorated with scattered sprays of fruit and flowers.
