Bowl of earthenware transfer-printed in black enamel and inside is a medallion enclosing a figure of a man in a landscape intersected by a pair of compasses on which are inscribed 'Bridle thy will, 'Remember thy End, 'Fear God' and 'Know Thyself', and round the medallion is the motto 'KEEP WITHIN COMPASS AND YOU SHALL BE SHURE, TO AVOID MANY TROUBLES WHICH OTHERS ENDURE' and below, in a rococo frame, 'THE END OF THE UPRIGHT MAN IS PEACE', and around the medallion are four small vignettes in rococo panels representing a rake's progress (gambling, seduction, shipwreck and imprisonment), and the border has floral sprays. On the outside are two hunting scenes, alternating with a seashore scene with fishermen and a girl, and a riverside scene with an angler and washerwoman.
