  • Label for 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900', Gallery 101, de-canted March 2017: '21 Dishon a Stand (Tazza) About 1864 Solon was contracted to the Sèvres factory but also worked for other manufacturers such as Rousseau. He developed a technique of pâte-sur-pâte, in which thin layers of liquid clay were built up and carved to give an effect similar to antique or Renaissance cameos. In 1870 the Franco-Prussian War drove Solon to Britain, where he introduced pâte-sur-pâte to Minton & Co. France;commissioned by François-Eugène Roussuea; manufacturer unknown; decorated by Marc Louis Emmanuel Solon Porcelain, with pâte-sur-pâte decoration. Museum no. 759&A-1864 Given by F.-E. Rousseau'
  • TAZZA AND COVER Francois Eugène Rousseau (1827-1891) Retailer Marc Louis Emmanuel Solon (1835-1913) Maker Paris: about 1864 Porcelain with pâte-sur-pâte decoration 759 & a-1864 Rousseau, an interesting designer and entrepreneurial commissioner, retailed ceramic and glass products. M. Solon trained as an illustrator in Paris and then joined the Sevres factory where he learned the pdte-sur-pdte technique of applying layers of slip to build up decoration, a technique effective in rendering diaphanous drapery and foliage. In 1870 the Franco- Prussian War drove him to England. He settled at Minton's, where he introduced the technique while maintaining a profitable mystique about it. Given by F. E. Rousseau
