Rousseau, an interesting designer and entrepreneurial commissioner, retailed ceramic and glass products. M. Solon trained as an illustrator in Paris and then joined the Sevres factory where he learned the pdte-sur-pdte technique of applying layers of slip to build up decoration, a technique effective in rendering diaphanous drapery and foliage. In 1870 the Franco- Prussian War drove him to England. He settled at Minton's, where he introduced the technique while maintaining a profitable mystique about it.
