PAIR OF PEDESTALS Sèvres Porcelain Factory Manufacturers Paris (Sèvres): about 1813 Biscuit porcelain with high relief frieze and blue ground 395 & a-1874 Josiah Wedgwood perfected his jasper-ware in 1775, first colouring the clay with cobalt and afterwards washing the surface to give a contrasting blue background to white reliefs. In 1785, and probably earlier, the Sèvres factory produced similar vases. Few examples are known, but they are of high quality. These pedestals, bought in 1874 from the Barker Collection, are probably of about the same date as the vase shown nearby. One shows the Triumph of Amphritrite and the Toilet of Venus, and the other Diana hunting and Diana surprised by Actaeon.
