Jacob Mardochee trained under the painter Antoine Gros and then travelled around Europe. He became interested in the decorative arts in England, and by 1834 had bought factories at Fontainebleu and Paris which he ran using his wife's surname. Petit. Useful wares, such as this plate, represent early production; its mannerist style is only one of many adopted and exaggerated for his increasingly ornamental, extravagant output. He also supplied white ware for decoration by other workshops, including that of Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893), the donor of this plate.
