Place of origin |
This is a textile sample of a design by Nina Altman dating from the mid-1940s. Altman was prolific and created most of her work for Julius Frank who owned the Manchester-based textile manufacturer's Frank Designs. Its tight composition and complexity indicate that it was destined for the high end of the market, and sets it apart from the prevailing Utility aesthetic of that period and work by designers such as Enid Marx.
The accommpanying letter from J H Frank to Nina Altman (E.869-2002) at the point of her resignation in September 1945 indicates the high esteem in which he held Altman and her work, especially for her paisley designs.
