| Gallery label | Saara Hopea (1925-84. Hopea-Untracht from 1960) trained in interior design at the Central School of Industrial Design, Helsinki. Like many of her contemporaries she excelled in a wide variety of materials. Perhaps best known for her jewellery, in the 1950s she achieved silver medals for her glass at two of the prestigious Milan Triennale. In 1952 she joined Nuutajärvi glassworks and the Arabia pottery, as an associate of Kaj Franck. Like him, she was equally at ease in designing richly decorative glass like this vase and more formally functional tableware (see 9629). This slightly tapered vase (shape no. SH109) was made in three sizes with green or purple spots and also in a cylindrical version (shape no. SH100). |
