ca. 1790 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Puzzle jug of lead-glazed earthenware and painted in overglaze enamels, and moulded in the form of a bearded and red-faced satyr's head, with a round pedestal base. The head is crowned with vine-leaves and grapes, and the mouth of the jug has a wavy rim, outlined in brown and moulded at the lip with the head of a sailor in a black hat between two goat's heads in low relief. The upper part of the handle rises above the rim and is moulded with the figure of a merman with a vine-wreathed head and divided tail, coloured green, forming a tube which communicates by the lower branch with the inside of the jug and proceeds round the neck where it is interrupted at equal intervals by three apertures, coloured pink. The rim of the jug is pierced with an openwork pattern. A pink band is round the base.
