Vase
ca. 1990 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The surface decoration of this porcelain vase reveals Kwon Sun-hyông’s twin passions: colour and painting. A cream glaze covers the lower body. On the upper body, Kwon has applied a brown glaze over which he has liberally added a crystalline green glaze, allowing it to splash and drip at the shoulder. Precipitation in the kiln has caused spots of black to form on the green glaze.
Kwon was born in 1929 and graduated from Seoul National University in 1955. After continuing his studies in the United States he returned to teach at his alma mater, where he has influenced generations of potters as well as producing his own work.
