This costume design by Alix Stone (1913-2010) was executed for a production of Richard Rodney Bennett's opera The Mines of Sulphur, performed by Sadler's Wells Opera at Sadler's Wells, 24 February 1965. The libretto was written by Beverley Cross. The production was directed by Colin Graham, and the lighting was designed by Robert Bryan.

The Mines of Sulphur was revived by the Sadler's Wells Opera at the London Coliseum in September 1973, and by English National Opera North at the Leeds Grand Theatre in March 1980.

Physical description
On a 'textured wash' ground in pale brown, a full length female figure with loose red hair, facing left, wearing a voluminous, full-length orange brown robe with wide sleeves pleated up the arm, beneath which at the front can be seen a full length loose, low-necked white robe. Overlaid in sections with textured fabrics.
The design is mounted onto white paper with fabric swatches including lace and organza in shades of pink, dull green and orange-browns pinned to the left-hand side..
