Place of origin

This heavy baluster jar is in the typical style of popular Korean ceramics of the 19th century. Its decoration of a large powerful phoenix among clouds has been outlined in black. The phoenix has powerful wings and a curving, extended tail. Believed to appear in times of prosperity, the phoenix was considered a bird of good omen, and thus an appropriate subject to adorn objects owned by members of the Korean court.
