Object history
Purchased in 1903 from G. Duseigneur, 18 rue Seguier, Paris, for 1200 francs (£47.13.6). At that time the ceiling was in three pieces and was described as 'much damaged', but it was argued in a memo dated 12 November that 'The French inlaid ceiling which dates probably from the period of Louis XIII is an excellent piece of design and would I think be a very desirable acquisition. There is no similar object in the Museum and the price is low. Very similar decoration appears in some panelling in the Palais de Justice, Dijon. See Sauvageot, Palais de France; p. 81. pl. 12,13.'. In an earlier memo (dated 23 October) it was noted that the ceiling was 'Bought in the neighbourhood of Toulouse'. Nominal File MA/1/D1997/2.
