Celadon Bowl with Incised Parrot Design

Bowl
1200-1250 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

With its slightly outward-flaring rim, this is a rare example of a celadon bowl incised with parrots interspersed with flowers and clouds. The surface is glossy and evenly glazed a deep greenish colour. There are large silica spur marks on the underside of the sloping foot. Since it resembles a celadon shard excavated from the seabed off Wonsando Island in Boryeong estimated to have been made in the 1230s, the bowl is likely to have been produced at a kiln in Sadang-ri, Gangjin, in the early 13th century.
