Pouring Bowl

16th century or 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Pouring bowl of fritware, painted in cobalt blue under a clear glaze. The exceptional shape of this pouring bowl, is a copy of similar metal vessel used in the hammam. The globular shape starts with a slightly rolled rim and a narrow straight neck painted with debased elements of the wave-and-spray motif. These as well as the shoulder decoration of linked lappets are interrupted by the spout which can also be used as a handle. Flowers, balustrades and leaves fill the elongated space on both sides. Even the under part has a five-tiered painting of small half flowers. The main body is covered with four round flowers with large petals and leaf fillers. Smaller flower sprays act as dividers. A row of reserve-painted panels with leaves surrounds the narrower lower part of the body above a white band which leads to the broadened base ring. Imitation Chinese square mark in blue.
